He wore the key to death around his neck.

A teenage runaway’s post-apocalyptic world comes tumbling down when she discovers a survivor in a field of dead bodies.

Condemned as a runaway and sentenced to work as a Cleaner, fifteen-year-old Anna now spends her days searching for valuables in a field of dead warriors. Her life goes from bad to worse, however, when she stumbles upon a plague carrier, a boy her age who could kill her entire camp with a single drop from the flask he carries around his neck.

Approximately 26 pages long, THE PLAGUE CARRIER is the first story in Merrie Destefano’s new series set in a post-apocalyptic United States, where survivors are still recovering from a Civil War. East of the Mississippi, peace reigns and the people are free. But west of the Mississippi is a different story. Here, the countryside is ravaged by erratic thunderstorms and tornadoes, and the inhabitants continue to battle one another using advanced forms of chemical warfare. Here, anyone who breaks the law is sold into slavery, where he must serve in a labor camp until his sentence is fulfilled.

The Plague Carrier eBook Merrie Destefano

This is a short post-apocalyptic YA story.

Anna's life has fallen to pieces, but she stills keeps hope and keeps going on. Then a dangerous boy shows up and might destroy what little she has left. I loved that there's a minimum of worldbuilding, but that Destefano still manages to create a clear post-apocalyptic setting and atmosphere with well chosen words and descriptions.

This being a short story I can't tell too much without spoiling, but it was a great read, and I wouldn't mind reading more stories in this setting.

The Plague Carrier eBook Merrie Destefano Reviews

In typically flawless Merrie Destefano style, The Plague Carrier is at once evocative, engaging and terrifying. I've never been a reader of post-apocalyptic stories, but Destefano has convinced me otherwise with this Hunger Games-style tale of young people and their quest for survival. I heartily recommend this compelling read -- it definitely deserves the 5-stars I give it. Its visual language and heartbreaking premise will keep me coming back for more from this author.
I really enjoyed this book. Kept my attention which is very important. Would recommend.
There are few fictional worlds grimmer than the one Merrie Destefano paints in THE PLAGUE CARRIER. And this is only a short story! But it yanks readers into its gruesome scenario right on the opening page, and leaves them breathless to find out what's going to happen next.

Finding out what kind of world this is and what happens there, is one of the pleasures of reading THE PLAGUE CARRIER, and I will leave that to you to discover. I'm waiting for the novel, which would more completely fill in the backstory of how the world in this tale came about, and bring the protagonists to a safer place than where the story leaves them. Sometimes my suspension of disbelief was a little challenged, as in "what? They do WHAT?" Still, it's entertaining stuff and will keep you reading, even if mainly recommended for the strong of stomach. Think of Margaret Atwood of THE HANDMAID'S TALE crossed with Stephen King, throw in a dash of romance along with a lot of dead bodies, and you'll get the idea.
Delicious Bite
Hee hee! This probably sounds silly, but I quite enjoyed this story because it was just a quick morsel of what could have been a huge story. There is definitely some world building going on. It leads to a lot of questions that never really get answered, but enough are answered for you to have context and the world building isn’t the key. The story between two people is. That’s what is so great about this. It focuses on what is important and offers only enough of everything else to make sense. Yay!

Rushed Ending
While the story was quick, fun, and interesting, the ending just felt out of place. You have this wonderful story that really delves into just one day of interactions only to suddenly leap forward. The pacing just felt off for the last segment of the story. Part of me understands why this particular choice was made and another part of me wishes it would have better matched what the rest of the story was like.
I grabbed this when its price dropped to zero, and read it over a lunch break. From the perspective of a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, I'm not sure the details of the universe are completely realistic, but one of the things about YA fiction is that you're kind of allowed to set up a world without needing to really explain how it got that way.

In any case, I still enjoyed the story quite a bit. The writing is good, and though I'm not a fan of youthful romance in my post-apocalypses, I'm still looking forward to reading any future books or stories in the series.
Merrie Destefano's THE PLAGUE CARRIER may be advertised as post-apocalyptic, but think it's more post-war. Actually, the war is still kind of continuing. A Civil War has divided USA into the East (of the Mississippi) and the West. Anna is in the West, but wants to get to the East. But she's currently a slave, a Cleaner who pries valuables from corpses.

A boy arrives in the settlement searching for his birth father, but he won't do it alone. He has the perfect bargaining tool the plague in a flask hanging from his neck. This is biological warfare just waiting to happen.

The setting/world-building is intriguing, and I'd like to know how it came to be.
The title itself kinda of gives away we're dealing with a speculative story of the dystopian sort. It's a brief tale, but there is some excellent prose, imaginative situation, and characters that will appeal to those who enjoy outcast-protagonists. I enjoyed the story. For roughly a buck, just read it.

My only critique is that the premise merited a more complex outworking. The ending seemed to come fast. A small quibble, and what it means is, really, I wanted to spend more time with the people in their world. And that's a good thing.

Also, given the brouhaha over reviews over the last year NO..this was not a freebie for me and I"m not a promo-hound. I bought this story and read it and liked it. No jive here. D
